Duralex proves that a design classic can be both culturally memorable and extremely hard to break. Turn over a tumbler and you will find a number moulded into the base; French schoolchildren famously used it to decide their “age” at lunch.
The Picardie glass has been made from tempered glass in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin since 1945. It stacks, takes knocks and feels solid without being heavy. Today the factory belongs to its workers, who kept the furnaces and the knowledge alive. That feels like the right future for glassware designed to be shared, dropped occasionally and used again.
